"Baroque Frame -italy, 17th Century "
Rectangular in shape, this beautiful wooden frame features a rich Baroque carved decoration. Its lower part is occupied by a series of trophies of arms while its uprights are decorated with two superb caryatids in high relief affecting the aspect of winged women. These two "grottesques" echo the Venetian ornamental tradition and in particular the art of Jacopo Sansovino and his pupils which is displayed on the ceilings of the Doge's Palace, but also on imposing frames which make the reputation of the Serenissima. .
As a whole, our work is presented as the stage setting for an Italian-style theater, crowned in its upper part with a valance. This mise en abyme spins the famous analogy between painting and drama, which played a preponderant role in the discourse on painting and the representation of passions until the end of the 18th century.
