In our example from the 18th century we have the fabulous decoration of theSafavides rugs which is reproduced with Shah Abbas motifs. In addition some small animals are represented in the border at the ends. Old restorations from the 19th century but in perfect condition .
For centuries, these carpets on canvas were embroidered in a special technique in the southern Portuguese town of Arraiolos, located in the Alentejo region near Evora. Often they were produced as commissions for the aristocracy, wealthy citizens or church dignitaries. Since the beginning of the 19th century, carpets of this provenance have had Franco/European decorations. This one, because of its graphic design, is the proof of its earlier dating.
