František Ženíšek was one of the leading Czech painters of the 19th century and from 1885 to 1896 he worked as a professor at the Academy of Arts, architecture and design in Prague (his assistant was Jakub Schikaneder).
From 1896 to 1915 he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. During his educational work he trained a number of pupils, including Jaroslav Špillar, Jan František Gretsch, František Urban, Jan Dědina, VK Budek, Karel Záhorský, Arnošt Hofbauer, his son František Ženíšek Jr., Jan Preisler, etc.
