Otto Eerelman was a painter, watercolourist, designer recognized for his genre and animal scenes.
He was specialized in the representation of horses and dogs and was a portrait painter at the Dutch court, notably for the Princess Wilhelmina (1880-1962).
The painter studied at the “Minerva” Academy in Groningen then at the Antwerp Academy before going to Paris and Brussels where he specialized himself in figure painting.
After teaching in Groningen between 1867 and 1874, he settled in The Hague in 1875 and painted at the royal court until 1902.
He was knighted at the age of eighty and died in Groningen in 1926.
One of his best-known works of art is kept in the Rijksmuseum, it is “Queen Wilhelmina's Entrance to Frederiksplein”, a large 140x200cm painting. Other works of the artist are kept in museums, in particular those of Haarlem, Leiden and Rotterdam.
