Auguste Matisse is a painter and designer, a student of Bonnat born in Nevers (Nièvre) on May 12, 1866 and died in Bréhat on September 19, 1931. He is buried in the cemetery of the island. He lived in Bréhat for 35 years in the North Island, by the Corderie near the hold of the old soda factory. Official painter of the Navy, he painted maritime landscapes and many waves. He also produced stained glass windows and posters, including one famous for the Olympic Games in Chamonix Mont-Blanc in 1924. He was a member of the French Artists and exhibitor at the Salon d'Automne.
