An Oil On Panel, Coastal Landscape By William Joseph Julius Bond
William Joseph Julius Caesar Bond (1833-1926)
William Joseph Julius Caesar Bond, n was a British painter specializing in seascapes and river landscapes.
The son of a schoolteacher, he benefited early on from an environment conducive to study and quickly turned to art.
He apprenticed with miniaturist Thomas Griffiths, then came to the attention of Pre-Raphaelite collector John Miller, who became his patron.
His early works bear the hallmarks of Pre-Raphaelitism, with a keen sense of detail and highly polished compositions. Bond exhibited from the 1850s at the Liverpool Academy, of which he became a member in 1859, as well as in London at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists.
Over time, his style evolved towards freer painting, influenced by J. M. W. Turner: luminous landscapes, atmospheric effects, seashores and river scenes produced during his travels in England, Wales and the Netherlands.
