18th century French school, painted on canvas. As indicated on the back of the canvas, this portrait certainly represents François Rabelais in the habit of an ecclesiastical. (see the two portraits of Rabelais for comparison). François Rabelais, writer and doctor who died April 9, 1553 at the age of 70. Dimensions of the painting: L / H: 43 X 51 cms.
