Sèvres Biscuit Bust Of General Marceau

Very beautiful bust from the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, in biscuit porcelain on a blue enameled pedestal representing General Marceau. Marked "Sèvres" in a cartouche on the back. Marks of the manufacturer "S86": 1886 for the paste and "gilded in Sèvres 95": 1895 for the gilding. The famous General François-Séverin Desgraviers, known as Marceau, a historical figure of the French Revolution, was born on March 1st in a house on rue du Chapelet in Chartres. He died in combat in Germany on September 21st, 1796 while trying to protect the retreat of General Jourdan and received funeral honors from his Austrian adversaries. He entered the Pantheon in 1889 on the occasion of the celebrations of the Centenary of the French Revolution. His ashes rest in the Pantheon, at Les Invalides and in Chartres.
