On The Seine, Paris, By Pierre De Belay
Pierre de Belay (Quimper 1890 - Ostend 1947)started painting with his father, an amateur painter. At 15, he joined Paris Max Jacob, a friend of the family. He rubs shoulders with the poet's friends, including Picasso, Apollinaire, André Salmon, Juan Gris. He paints portraits of his friends, scenes of Parisian life, ports, markets, circuses, courts, etc.
Pierre de Belay shares his life between Paris and Brittany where he is inspired by scenes of daily life, ports, markets and cafes. He stays there two months a year (Audierne, Concarneau, Pont-Aven, Benodet, Douarnenez, Lesconil). He frequents very little the painters of Brittany, in order to keep his independence.
His dynamic, brightly colored and strongly structured paintings appears to all as fundamentally modern. He creates the technique of "trellis", an interweaving of features that gives a certain depth to these works. This technique is influenced by the engraving he has been practicing since 1926. He exhibits at the Independents, the Salon d'Automne and the Tuileries.
His works are in many French museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Bordeaux, Brest, Concarneau, Museum Eugene-Boudin Honfleur, Museum of Montmartre, Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes, as well as in Belgium, Switzerland in Geneva, the United States in San Francisco.
This is a very good example of his work: a river scene on the Seine in Paris in 1918. Vibrant colors and a strong brushstroke, it perfectly shows the light of day and the landscape. A wonderful painting that will illuminate any room.
