Léon Philippet, born in 1843 in Liège and died in 1906 in Brussels, is a Belgian painter.
At the end of his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège (1856-1867) with Chauvin, Soubre, Nisen and Drion, Léon Philippet made a study trip to Paris (1866-1867) with Bouguereau, then stayed in Italy from 1868 to 1887.
At the start of a grant from the Lambert Darchis Foundation (1868-1872), Léon Philippet received the Rome Prize in 1872.
He remained in Rome for nearly twenty years. In 1877 he founded the "Belgian Workshops" there, a future Belgian Academy in Rome where he painted mostly popular scenes from Roman life.
After his return to Belgium (1887), his work will mainly consist of portraits and landscapes of the Belgian coast. He exhibited at the Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Liège from 1887 to 1898.
James Ensor has always professed the keenest admiration for the work of Léon Philippet, hailing him as the master of painting of the time.
He died in Brussels in 1906.
