Henry Kissinger, born Heinz Alfred Kissinger in 1923 in Germany, is an American political scientist and diplomat.

German by birth, of Jewish faith, he emigrated to the United States in 1938 to flee Nazi persecution and was naturalized in 1943. Interpreter for the American secret services during the Second World War in Europe, he became for a short period administrator of the city ​​of Krefeld.

Returning to the United States in 1946, he studied at Harvard before entering politics. First an adviser to American national security, he became secretary of state for the Republican government of Richard Nixon, a post he then held under Gerald Ford. Promoter of Realpolitik, he played an important role in American diplomacy during the Cold War from 1968 to 1977, being in particular, in 1973, one of the architects of the signing of the Paris peace agreements. It inspired the policy of Relaxation with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and played a crucial role in the rapprochement with China from 1971.

Kissinger received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for his action in resolving the Vietnam War and the Yom Kippur War. He is the oldest surviving Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
