He participated in the painting of Palazzo Pitti, but returned to France soon after. Puget went to Toulon and Marseille, was an official painter of the two cities and painted numerous altarpieces for churches in the south of France in the 1650s. He then went again to Rome and from 1661 to 1668 and 1670 to Genoa , where he also had his son François trained by his friend Giovanni Battista Castiglione. At that time, the painting style of Anthony van Dyck and Guido Reni gained influence over him. In 1669, he returned to Toulon, where he became director of decoration of ships at the royal shipyard. In 1679, Puget left the shipyard and concentrated mainly on landscape drawings and mythological themes (Achill and the Kentar Chiron, around 1685, Marseille, Musée des Beaux-Arts).
