Portrait of officer of the 4th regiment of light horse throwers probably of the Imperial Guard wearing his decorations and a giberne decorated with a fleur-de-lis plate and crown. On June 18, 1811 a decree decided the transformation of 6 regiments of dragons into regiments of light-horse which had to be armed with the lance. These were the dragon regiments: 1,3,8,9,10 and 29 which became the regiments of chevau-light lancers from 1 to 6. The purpose of Napoleon, by creating regiments of lancers had been to oppose them to the irregular cavalry of enemies, mainly Cossacks. At the fall of the Empire in 1814 the lancers regiments were disbanded, except for a few such as the 4th regiment of horse-light French lancers which became "the legion of Monsieur" and the second which became "Lancier de la Reine".
