Leon Detroy 1857-1955. Born in Chinon, friend of Monet, Guillaumin and Lebourg, Léon Detroy was one of the leading painters of the “Ecole de Crozant”, a movement referring to the painters of the Creuse Valley who took inspiration from the dramatic landscape. Detroy was noted for his impressionistic style and bold use of colour, indeed, the colours of this fine example of his work appear remarkably fresh and contemporary today.
In the 1890s he set up his studio at Gargilesse in the Creuse, devoting is life to his painting and distancing himself from the Parisian world while keeping abreast of the new techniques such as "Pointillisme" introduced by the finest artists of the time and which he adapted to his own taste.
As with all great Frenchmen, he has a street named after him – at Fresselines.
