Auguste Matisse is a painter and draftsman, pupil of Bonnat born in Nevers (Nièvre) May 12, 1866 and died at Bréhat on September 19, 1931. He is buried in the cemetery of the island. He lived in Bréhat for 35 years on the North Island, near Corderie near the hold of the old soda factory. Official painter of the Navy, he painted maritime landscapes and many waves. He also produced stained glass and posters, including one famous for the 1924 Olympics in Chamonix Mont-Blanc. He was a member of the French Artists and Exhibitor at the Salon d'Automne.
