Simon Petit of Coupray is a painter engraver of the late eighteenth century, born in Coupray in Haute Marne, arrived in Paris in 1765, exhibited at the Salon de la Jeunesse from 1781 and the Salon until 1812. Pupil of Jean Restout (Willk-Brocard, 2017, p.76-77), he also painted in miniature , his miniatures are rare and of good quality (The painters in miniature N. Lemoine-Bouchard p.420, Letter of the Miniature No. 12). Known as a genre painter, he also performs many portraits often small format. Our portrait presents a young boy of about ten years, his expression is sweet and the treatment of skin tones is perfectly rendered. The use of wood as a support brings realism to the face of this child. A label on the back includes an exhibition number and an identification "Comte de Baume, Monfredet?"
