"Still Life In La Fiasque, Bread, Butter, Wine, Strawberries And Grapes. Alsatian School Seventeenth S"
Presented in an exceptional Louis XIII gilt wood frame decorated with scrolls of foliage and acanthus leaves. Oil on canvas Dimensions with frame: 82 x 70 cm Workshop of Sebastian Stoskopff (1597-1657) Biographical reminder: the Alsatian painter Sébastien Stoskopff was trained by Frédéric Brentel then by Daniel Soreau. Sébastien Stoskopff lived in Paris between 1621 and 1641 and traveled to Italy around 1629. He was very popular in his time and is considered one of the European masters of still life, very comfortable in the treatment of opposing textures such as the glass and wicker on one side, or glass and tin etc ... The work of Sebastien Stoskopff was rediscovered very late, in the mid-20th century, in the 1930s, which means that it has remained in the shadows for over 3 centuries! Stoskopff's work remains between 60 and 69 paintings, according to critics. 10 of them are dated and 26 to 29 are signed by the master's hand. All signed works are still lifes. But correspondences attest that Stoskopff was also a portraitist, and that he notably performed a double portrait of Count Jean de Nassau-Idstein and his wife Anna. For the most part, the works of the artist are about the representation of everyday objects, very often in the field of cooking or food. In 1640, when he returned to Strasbourg, local painters jealous of this appreciated artist, single moreover. He is forbidden to wear the title of master painter. What does it matter! His insolence and the beauty of his works make him untouchable and the protection of Jean de Nassau does the rest. With oil and some pigments, he attacks the chiaroscuro. In the basket of Venetian glass, his masterpiece, the very fine white lines and the light reflections of a broken glass provide the same emotion as a religious painting. Sébastien Stoskopff dies murdered at Jean de Nassau at the end of a black mass where he abused drugs and alcohol. The organizer of the Sabbath will end up burned at the stake for witchcraft. Stoskopff's life remains a mystery. In the seventeenth century, still life is fashionable and a great success and the Academy does not disregard the genre because it is common that we offer, with his consent, a still life to a personality.
