Terracotta Sculpture By Joseph The Guluche (1849-1915)

Artist: Joseph Le Guluche (1849-1915)
Polychrome terracotta sculpture depicting a couple, entitled "My Government" and signed J. Le Guluche on the terrace, and bearing on the back the stamp "Fontaine and Durieux Paris" and the number 2085. This piece is in good condition despite a few small gaps of paint, three small chips on the edge of the hat, a slight gleam at the end of Madame's nose. No major accident, no restoration. Warm colors. Joseph Le Guluche, born in Plourivo (Côtes-d'Armor) on September 20, 1849 and died in Villejuif on January 19, 1915, is a French sculptor. It has mainly produced popular subjects for decorative terracotta warehouses in Villenauxe-la-Grande (Aube) and L'Isle-Adam (Val-d'Oise). Son of a sailor and a filenderwoman, Joseph Marie Le Guluche was born on September 20, 1849 in Plourivo. In 1851, the family moved to Le Havre. In 1879, he lives in L'Isle-Adam, near the decorative terracotta factory of Mauger and Letut. The collaboration of Joseph Le Guluche with the Mauger families and especially with Alphonse Hanne marks the golden age of these manufactures. Polymorphic, his work is divided into several broad categories: seaside subjects, rural subjects, female allegories of Art Nouveau inspiration, orientalist subjects. Made in stamped terracotta, polychrome or not, these works measure from 20 cm to 1 meter. Destined for a popular public, the characters of Joseph Le Guluche are quite emblematic of the phenomenon of publishing sculpture in full development at the end of the nineteenth century. A collection of his works are kept at the Louis-Senlecq Museum of Art and History in L'Isle-Adam
