High quality portrait signed by the talented Charles Gleyre. France has so far never devoted a monographic exhibition to Charles Gleyre. However, it occupies a major place in academic painting in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century. The smooth perfection of his workmanship and his mainly mythological subjects have long led him to believe a cold, conventional and blind aesthetic to the revolutions of his time. Research in art history has, however, raised awareness of the important role of his workshop, which both Jean-Léon Gérôme and Claude Monet or Fréderic Bazille. Large oil on canvas (wear due to an old oval frame), monogrammed CG Annotated chassis "Edmond Fournier, lieutenant to the 96th infantry killed 8 7 in the seizure of Sevastopol" "painted by C. GLEYRE 1856" 117x90 cm Biographies : Born in 1832, Edmond Fournier was slain in a trench in Sevastopol on September 8, 1855. He was the son of Edmond Fournier (1800-1865), an artillery officer and aide-de-camp to the Duke of Montpensier, who resigned of his duties after 1848 by attachment to the Orleans family. Edmond Fournier was Manet's maternal uncle, and Edmond, who had the same name as his father, his cousin. The death of the young man was badly felt by Edouard Manet who came to present his condolences to his uncle. The latter, muddled with Father Manet, replied to the painter: "Pontcelles October 1, 1855, I am so unhappy and so sad, my dear Edward, that I am afraid I have not expressed to you sufficiently how grateful I am for the visit you made us yesterday. In almost all his letters, poor Edmond spoke to us about you and asked us about your work and your successes. (...) »Charles Gleyre (1806-1874) One of the principal artists of the orientalist school. Swiss, he moved to Paris in 1838, he was a professor at the School of Fine Arts from 1843 to 1870. Among his students are: Whistler, Renoir, Bazille, Claude Monet, Sisley.
