Gustave Henri Colin (1828-1910) "The Return of the Hunter - Landscape of the Basque Country" We recognize perfectly at the bottom the Rhune massif seen from around Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure Oil on canvas Signed below right 75 cm high x 100 cm wide In a beautiful Louis XV style frame carved and gilded wood and carved stucco 95 cm high x 120 cm wide Biography: Gustave Henri COLIN is a painter, landscape designer, born in Arras in 1828, died in 1910. He is the pupil of Dutilleux in Arras, then, in Paris, of Ary Scheffer, Thomas Couture and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot of which he will keep a very strong influence. He began in 1857 at the Salon with "the portrait of the Aegis". Settled in Ciboure, he produced a large number of landscapes. In 1862, he moved to Saint-Jean-de-Luz where he painted many scenes of the Basque Country. Professor of painting at the Académie Julian in Paris, he participated in Salon des Refusés in 1863 with "Players Pelote". Then he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon until the founding of the National. From the beginning he was a member of the new artistic group where he exhibited landscapes and paintings from the Basque Country and Spain. In 1874, it is part of the first exhibitions of the Impressionists where he presents five paintings. He won a medal of honor at the Salon of 1880, a silver medal in 1889, and the gold medal in 1900. Émile Zola was a great admirer of the painter: "his shot of light of a splendid intensity". He was an artist with a very marked, realistic temperament whose canvases are remarkable both from the point of view of composition and from the point of view of color. An exhibition of his work took place at the Salon de la Nationale in 1906. His works can be found in many national museums such as in Paris, at the Musée d'Orsay; at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille; at the Arras Museum; Bayonne; Puy; Neufchatel; of Pau; from Reims ...
