Son of a fisherman, he grew up on the island of Ré where he was noticed for his drawings by the Painter Rochelais William Bouguereau. He went to Paris in Bouguereau's studio and attended the Académie Julian (under the instruction of Robert-Fleury) and the Academy of Fine Arts.
He learned the engraving and obtained the first Grand Prix at the Coucours of Rome in 1884. He went to the Villa Medicis and returned to Paris in 1886.
William Barbotin was an anarchist activist and collaborated with the libertarian press, notably the magazine La Revolt and the New Times of Jean Grave.
