Oil on canvas. Caravaggio School of Utrecht. Work of the workshop of Hendrick ter Brugghen.

This great allegorical portrait is imbued with the universe of Ter Brugghen: a raw realism showing the living as it is. The modeling of the flesh is without concession. This young drinker wears a grin almost vulgar, it is the reflection of his drunkenness.
The still life that unfolds on the entablature as well as the wine symbolize the different nuances of the taste. The immense mastery with which are painted the lobster, the lemon, the glass balloon or the carpet could invite us to an allegory of the touch, the textures being sublimated.
The work has been framed and is offered in a frame of style with blackened wooden guilloches.

Dimensions: 78 x 60 cm the view - 94 x 77 cm with the frame

Hendrick ter Brugghen or Terbrugghen (The Hague? 1588 - Utrecht 1st Nov. 1629) is a Dutch painter of the first third of the XVIIth century. He began his apprenticeship at the age of 13 with Abraham Bloemaert. In 1614 he was the first Caravaggio painter from the north to return to his country after a long stay in Italy (to study the new way of painting initiated by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Caravaggio). He is considered the leader of the Caravaggio School of Utrecht, an artistic movement with Gerrit van Honthorst and Dirck van Baburen in his ranks.
