Pair Of Carved Wooden Lamps, 19th Century
Somewhere between sirens and sphinxes, these two creatures draw on several animals and allude to various shape-shifting mythological monsters. Their bodies, which end in the tails of snakes or sea monsters, might evoke the nymph Scylla, transformed into a fearsome monster by Circe. Their wings are a direct reference to the bodies of the sirens—extremely dangerous bird-women who endangered Odysseus’s journey. Finally, the lion’s forepaws form the body of a sphinx. These two sculptures are thus the work of an artist fascinated by ancient myths and well-versed in their representation in classical art. He has thus brought these two one-of-a-kind lamps to life in wood.
The set rests on a brass base and has a few discreet chips in the wood.
