Pair Of Bronze Candlesticks With Bearded Heads – 19th Century

Artist: Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892)

A beautiful pair of bronze candlesticks with a brown patina, crafted by the renowned foundry Ferdinand Barbedienne.

Each candlestick features an elegant baluster shaft adorned with an antique-style bearded male head, reminiscent of the figures of Dionysus or Silenus. The shafts are embellished with lateral volutes and rest on a remarkable tripod base decorated with foliage scrolls, ending in feet depicting human legs clad in cothurni.

The composition reflects the Neo-Greek and historicist style that was particularly popular during the Second Empire, a period during which the Barbedienne firm produced numerous decorative objects inspired by antiquity.

Beautiful quality of cast iron and chiseling, with an antique brown patina.

Signed “Barbedienne” on the back of the torso.

Date: second half of the 19th century.
