Carved Deer-antler Netsuke Depicting A Monk – Japan, 18th Century
A netsuke likely depicting a standing itinerant monk, wearing a wide hat and wrapped in a long robe with deeply carved folds. A piece of fabric appears to frame his expressive face and fall over his shoulders.
Carved from deer antler, this small sculpture features a cream-colored patina with golden hues, and darker areas in the recesses. On the back, the two himotoshi openings frame an undeciphered engraved mark. The sculptor remains unidentified.
