Large Nîmes Walnut Flour Box, Late 18th - Early 19th Century
Dimensions: 48 × 22 × 11 cm. Weight: 1.5 kg.
A superb wall-mounted flour box, richly carved in walnut and characteristic of the Languedoc region. A true wedding piece of furniture, its decoration incorporates symbols of marriage and prosperity: an olive wreath, an elegant carved bow with tassels on the upper panel, and a large openwork heart formed of wheat ears decorating the front sliding panel.
Designed to hang on the wall, this attractive household item kept flour close at hand. Once removed and placed on the table, it could be used to coat fish or other foods with flour before being closed and hung back on the wall, ready for the next market day.
Once common throughout Provence and Languedoc, this example comes from the Gard region. Its style and carving suggest a date from the Directoire period or the very beginning of the 19th century.
Good overall condition. Untouched and retaining its original character, with no restorations. Light cleaning recommended.
