Marussia Valero – Pastel, Portrait Of Francesca Giordano Leone – 1929 Italy
Artist: Marussia Valero
Born in St. Petersburg to a Spanish tenor father and a Ukrainian soprano mother, Maroussia Valero was a cosmopolitan painter who trained at the St. Petersburg Academy and in Milan as a student of Cesare Tallone. Active in Italy during the 1910s, she exhibited successfully at the Permanente in Milan (1917–1918), distinguishing herself with intense portraits and works exploring the play of light. Her body of work ranges from portraits of great character to nude portraiture, as well as frequent forays into the themes and archetypes of Spanish culture. After living in France, Spain, and California during the 1930s, she experienced the dramatic period of the Spanish Civil War in Madrid and died there in 1955.
