Ceramic Vase From Vietnam With A Phoenix And Peony Design, Bien Hoa Or Bat Trang Nguyen
Artist: Bat Trang Ou Bien Hoa
A large Vietnamese glazed earthenware vase featuring a classic design in shades of blue on a white background, depicting two phoenixes (fènghuáng) and large, fully blooming peonies—traditional symbols of prosperity and nobility in Asian art.
Although the design is reminiscent of the famous “blue-and-white” ceramics traditionally made on porcelain, the clay used for this vase is characteristic of certain regional productions in Asia.
This type of treatment is found in particular on pieces from the kilns of Biên Hòa or Bat Trang in Vietnam (often influenced by Chinese models from the Qing Dynasty), or on Chinese glazed stoneware intended for export or for popular decorative use in the 19th or 20th centuries.
The slightly crackled or thicker appearance of the glaze, as well as the cream-colored base, confirm the nature of the clay (stoneware/earthenware), distinguishing this piece from the characteristic translucent whiteness of pure porcelain.
This vase is in good overall condition; note a slight chip at the base.
