Glazed stoneware pitcher from the HB factory in Quimper, Odetta collection, Art Deco period, circa 1925–1935.
Polychrome decoration depicting, on one side, a Breton sailor wearing a beret, smoking a pipe, and dressed in a brown sailor’s jacket and ochre trousers with patchwork details. On the reverse side is a Breton woman wearing a white headdress and traditional costume. The stylized figures cover the entire body of the pitcher.
The design features matte and glossy glazes in a palette of brown, ochre, grayish green, white, and cobalt blue. The handle, base, and rim of the spout are accented with a deep blue.
This “Odetta” stoneware collection, developed by the HB factory in Quimper beginning in the 1920s, combines popular Breton themes with the innovative forms and designs of the Art Deco movement. Simplified figures and contrasting glazes characterize this creative period.
