Louis XV Period Walnut "tomb" Chest Of Drawers – 18th Century
An elegant and prestigious Louis XV period (18th century) commode, known as a "Tombeau" commode, crafted entirely from high-quality solid walnut. This piece boasts a superb curved silhouette on all sides (front and sides), characteristic of the finest mid-18th-century pieces. It features three rows of drawers richly carved with sinuous moldings. Details of carving and ornamentation:
The lower rail is a centerpiece: it is generously shaped and carved with a magnificent openwork frieze, centered with a floral medallion and flanked by exquisitely delicate scrolls and garlands of flowers.
The base consists of four cabriole legs terminating in remarkable carved "shell" scrolls, lending considerable lightness to the otherwise solid structure of the piece.
The uprights are also adorned with carved foliate drops that follow the curve of the corners.
Condition and Upholstery:
The piece retains a beautiful, deep, and warm original patina that perfectly highlights the walnut grain. It is adorned with rich period or style gilt bronze mounts (radiating medallion handles and carved keyhole escutcheons). A highly decorative piece, sound, stable, and in excellent condition.
