17th-century Neapolitan Painting, Bernardo Cavallino? Mythological Scene
Oil painting on canvas, from the Neapolitan school of the 17th century, possibly comparable to the works of Bernardo Cavallino (1616–1656).
The composition, theatrical and narrative in character, depicts a group of figures arranged within a landscape, with a semi-nude male figure in the foreground and several other figures gathered on the left. In the upper right, figures emerge from a cloud, introducing a mythological element.
The palette is dominated by brown and earthy tones, enlivened by the warm flesh tones and luminous openings in the sky. The contrast between areas of shadow and passages of light lends depth to the scene, while the complex arrangement of the figures enhances its dynamism.
