Monumental Bronze Fountain

This bronze fountain with a green patina is a striking historicist interpretation of the famous *Fontana del Bacchino*, created in the 17th century by the Florentine sculptor Ferdinando Tacca for the city of Prato. With its monumental dimensions, exuberant decoration, and ornamental vocabulary—drawing on the Florentine Renaissance and Tuscan Baroque—this work is in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style. This style enjoyed immense success, particularly in Florence, which was then a major center for artistic casting and the reproduction of prestigious historical models.
Created around 1660 for Prato’s Piazza del Comune, the Fontana del Bacchino depicts a young Bacchus seated among bunches of grapes, a symbol of abundance and prosperity. The original work, which has become an emblem of the city, belongs to the great tradition of Tuscan Baroque urban decoration developed under the Medici.
The current fountain freely reinterprets several elements of the Prato model, notably the large, dynamic basins, the sculpted edges, and the rich ornamental decoration inspired by the vocabulary of Florentine Mannerism.
