Ceramic Lamp Base, 1970s

Stately, openwork, egg-shaped lamp base made of glazed ceramic in shades of beige, brown, and mottled brown—both satin-finished and smooth—mimicking the appearance of rock or volcanic textures (Fat Lava), topped with a neckglazed in eggshell colors. In the style of French ceramicist Georges Pelletier or Italian-Canadian Raphaël Giarrusso, both of whom collaborated in the 1950s.

This type of lamp was very characteristic of the Mid-Century-style (1950s–1960s) productions of the Poterie d’Accolay in Burgundy. At Poteries d’Accolay, which he joined in the mid-1950s while still a student, Georges Pelletier primarily designed and signed lighting fixtures (table lamps and giant floor lamps) as well as figurines and articulated characters. It was within this community that he developed his signature style.

However, this lamp could more accurately be dated to the 1960s–1970s, a period when Georges Pelletier began collaborating with the firm Roche & Bobois. During these years of commercial collaboration, the artist generally did not sign his pieces, which sometimes makes identifying his lamps from the 1960s difficult.

However, we cannot guarantee the attribution.
