Artist Information:
Bertil Vallien is a contemporary Swedish artist, best known for his strange and ethereal molded glass sculptures. His works are mystical and coded forms of representation that evoke the aesthetics of primitivism, archaeology, and ancient runes. Often featuring haunting faces or figurative forms, Vallien's sculptures are made using an industrial process originally intended for metallurgy, merging material and process in a complex way that harks back to functionalism and the populist roots of modernism. Born in 1938 in Sollentuna, Sweden, Vallien studied drawing at a young age at the Konstfack School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, before becoming interested in ceramics for much of his youth. He joined the ceramics department at Konstfack in 1955 and subsequently pursued a career in industrial ceramic production that lasted over a decade. In recent years, Gaines's work has garnered international critical acclaim, leading to lectures in the United States and Japan and exhibitions at institutions such as the Litvak Gallery in Tel Aviv and the PAN in Amsterdam.
KOSTA BODA
Founded in 1742, the factory began by producing window glass, chandeliers, and drinking glasses. By the 1840s, the factory had been at the forefront of new trends and technical developments, producing pressed glass and, in the 1880s, establishing a new glass-cutting workshop. The factory is located in the Kingdom of Chrystal region of Sweden. In 1903, the company merged with Reijmyre glasbruk (glassworks), but both retained their own names, and Kosta maintained its reputation as a leading Swedish manufacturer with a range of art glass and tableware designed by prominent designers such as Vicke Lindstrand, artistic director from 1950 to 1973. With Vicke Lindstrand in charge of modern art glass production, the company became a leader in modern art glass and interior design objects in the 1960s and 1970s, following Vicke Lindström's legacy of Scandinavian design, often focusing on vases as well as other modern glass objects. Many of their products are still considered modern classics today. The company employed some of the greatest designers of the era, such as Mona Morales, Göran Wärff, and Bertil Wallien.
