Alabaster Bust Of Juliette Récamier On A Marble Pedestal, 19th Century
An elegant sculpture depicting the sublime and influential Juliette Récamier (1777–1849), based on the neoclassical masterpiece created by the Lyon-based sculptor Joseph Chinard (1756–1813) in satin-finished white alabaster. The subject is depicted here in the classical style, her head slightly tilted in a pensive and graceful pose. Her crossed hands and arms modestly hold a flowing drape across her chest. Her curly hair, executed with great finesse, is pulled up into a high bun typical of the Consulate period and held in place by a wide, textured headband.
Joseph Chinard is considered one of the most brilliant sculptors of the Revolutionary and Imperial periods; he excelled in the art of portraiture with a unique sensibility, blending the rigor of Neoclassicism with a vibrant sensuality he acquired during his stays in Rome. Created between 1804 and 1806, the original model of the bust of Juliette Récamier—now housed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon—remains his absolute masterpiece and one of the icons of French sculpture. Close friends, the sculptor and Juliette Récamier shared a deep artistic bond. Although renowned for her legendary beauty, she detested most depictions of herself; this bust is the only portrait she fully loved and approved of during her lifetime. Chinard imbues this work with modesty while allowing the body to be glimpsed beneath the veil. The work rests on a superb and substantial period composite pedestal, consisting of a drum made of deep burgundy red breccia marble, topped by a circular, molded base of veined white marble. This interplay of colors creates a magnificent contrast and lends the piece great decorative presence. This high-quality work is likely the creation of a workshop specializing in Grand Tour art objects.
Good condition, with a few foxing spots.
