19th-century William IV Period Mahogany Sideboard
A Fine William IV Period Mahogany and Ebony Stringing Breakfront Sideboard, Scotland, circa 1830
A superb early 19th-century William IV period figured mahogany and cross-banded ebony inlaid breakfront sideboard of excellent quality, constructed throughout from well-chosen timbers and retaining a rich, original color and patina.
The sophisticatedly shaped breakfront top is simple and elegant. Below is a long central frieze drawer, cross-banded and outlined with ebony stringing, fitted with a pair of turned mahogany knob handles, above a concave pull-out linen drawer featuring faux quilling or tambour on the front.
These central drawers are framed by stepped, spiral-turned, fluted pilasters, which transition into ring-turned and fluted supports, ending in finely turned feet. To the left is a full-height mahogany cabinet door with cross-banded ebony inlay; to the right, a full-height built-in mahogany cellarette drawer with cross-banded ebony inlay, ideal for bottle storage. These end sections are again flanked by columned legs, giving the piece a balanced and architectural presence. Standing on six elegantly tapered, fluted mahogany legs, this sideboard displays an outstanding depth of color and a warm, glowing patina that has developed over two centuries. Its generous proportions, refined styling, and superior timber quality strongly suggest it was a special commission.
Retaining its original keys and functioning locks and remaining in largely untouched condition, this sideboard is sturdy, practical, and ready for use. It is both a testament to exceptional late Georgian craftsmanship and a striking focal point for any interior seeking the authentic English country house look.
