Directly Carved Stone Statue Of A Wolf Devouring A Sheep By René Paris, Gold Medal
Artist: René Paris (paris 1881-1970 Batz-sur-mer)
Animal sculpture depicting a wolf devouring a Bizet sheep by René Paris (1881–1970)*.
The model for this sculpture is well-known; a life-size version received the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1920 (No. 3343) and was sold at Rouillac’s 34th Garden Party auction, originating from the collection of Master Hervé Poulain in Sologne.
Our stone sculpture is carved en bloc, likely from blue-gray sandstone.
It has a beautiful patina from having spent several years outdoors; personally, I could easily imagine this sculpture on a massive table as a centerpiece, much like Oudry’s Sèvres porcelain table centerpieces.
Approximate weight: 40 kg.
Worldwide shipping available upon request.
*An animal sculptor and student of Georges Gardet and Victor Peter, René Paris participated in the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a full member in 1906 and later served on the sculpture jury. He received an honorable mention in 1907 and was awarded medals in 1912, 1920 (gold medal), and 1944 (silver medal).
Public works:
- Paris, 15th arrondissement, Square Saint-Lambert, 1912: a wolfdog.
- Verdun: monument at the Saint-Fine Chapel, in memory of the soldiers of the 130th Division.
- Le Croisic, Place d’Armes: monument to Hervé Rielle.
