Frédéric BAYET-BIOT (Lyon 1853 – Villeurbanne 1934)
Two Horse Heads
Circa 1890
Original terracotta
33 x 40 cm
Signed: Bayet-Biot
A sculptor from Lyon, Frédéric Bayet-Biot was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he studied under Joseph Fabisch and Charles Dufraine. He exhibited regularly at the Lyon Society of Fine Arts between 1890 and 1928. The city of Lyon acquired several of his works, such as The Gleaner (1907), Poetry (1918), and Vercingetorix (1928). He also created a magnificent Virgin and Child for the façade of the Notre-Dame du Bon Secours Church in Montchat (Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement). These horse heads, clearly influenced by those on the Parthenon frieze, are executed with power and elegance. The alternation between bas-relief and high relief is particularly successful, creating a remarkable interplay of light and shadow.
