HENRY MARROT (1887–1964)
BRITTANY LIGHTHOUSE AND HARBOR
A beautiful gouache on paper by the painter Henry Marrot, depicting a picturesque Breton harbor dominated by its lighthouse, at the entrance to two stone piers.
The artist presents us with a particularly captivating composition, in which the deep blues of the sea blend with emerald greens, purples, and the delicate hues of the cloudy sky.
In the foreground, lush vegetation, trees, and rocks naturally frame the scene and draw the eye toward the harbor. In the background, the jetties and the lighthouse give rhythm to the composition, while a few Breton houses with bluish roofs stand out against the coastline.
The synthetic treatment of forms, the flat areas of color, and the freedom of the brushstroke reflect a resolutely modern sensibility, in a Post-Impressionist spirit with Fauvist accents.
The work as a whole exudes a peaceful and luminous atmosphere, characteristic of these seascapes that so inspired painters of the first half of the 20th century.
Gouache on paper, signed lower right.
Presented under glass, with a mat, in a beautiful carved wooden frame featuring geometric decoration that harmonizes particularly well with the composition.
