According To Jean Lurçat, “le Zodiaque” — Tapestry In Extremely Fine Petit-point — No. 1749
The Twelve Signs of the Zodiac
Extremely fine petit-point tapestry
An imposing textile wall panel composed of twelve individual pieces joined together into a single work depicting the entire Zodiac based on Jean Lurçat’s work. The ensemble showcases the painter’s signature iconographic, cosmic, and fantastical repertoire (radiant suns, constellations, mythological creatures, stellar and plant motifs). Each section, corresponding to an astrological sign, was embroidered independently before being meticulously assembled to form this large textile panel. Remarkable for the extreme fineness of its petit-point stitching, this piece offers a high density of detail and exceptional consistency in the embroidery. The quality of the needlework faithfully captures the graphic power and polychromatic palette characteristic of the master of the revival of modern French tapestry.
