Sailing Ships at Sea – Oil on panel, dated 1927

A superb oil on panel by Lucien-Victor Delpy, depicting magnificent sailboats with white sails gliding across a sea shimmering with turquoise and blue hues. The boats, with their yellow and green hulls, stand out against a luminous sky in a lively and harmonious composition.

Here, the artist employs a fresh and vibrant palette, combining the intense blues of the sea and sky with the luminous yellows of the boats. The energetic brushwork and the play of light on the water give this seascape a beautiful sense of movement and freshness.

Dated 1927, this work attests to Delpy’s talent for capturing the maritime atmosphere and the beauty of sailing ships.

Artist’s Biography

Lucien-Victor Delpy (1898–1967) was a French painter born in Paris, particularly renowned for his seascapes and harbor scenes. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Fernand Cormon, Émile Renard, and Jean-Pierre Laurens, he completed his apprenticeship with Charles Fouqueray.

After setting up his studio in Montparnasse in 1923, he discovered Brittany in 1924 and became fascinated by its ports, fishing boats, and the lives of sailors, particularly in Concarneau, Brest, and Lorient.

He won a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1927 and was subsequently appointed official painter to the Navy in 1931. His work is distinguished by a luminous palette, a vigorous brushstroke, and a remarkable sense of composition. He also created works during military and maritime missions, notably in North Africa and Indochina.

Recognized for his contribution to 20th-century French marine painting, Lucien-Victor Delpy remains a sought-after artist among collectors of seascapes and Breton art. This work has been authenticated by Mrs. Marine Delpy, the artist’s daughter, under Ref.
