Circa 1970, Marseille period
A painting with a very impasto texture, showing the influence of Ambrogiani
Michel POURTEYRON was born in 1938 in Castillon-la-Bataille
The grandson of a blacksmith and son of a butcher, he spent his childhood in his native village, surrounded by vineyards.
When, at the age of ten, his grandmother gave him his first box of paints, he found great joy in them.. This marked the dawn of a calling that led him in 1952 to the School of Decorative Arts and Applied Arts. Life’s hardships awaited him in Paris, where he had to hold down half a dozen jobs just to make ends meet. Working as a dockworker at Les Halles, he sold his first oil paintings backstage at the Lido.
In the late 1950s, he moved to Roquevaire in Provence to be with the woman he loved. He painted portraits of children. Success began to take hold; his paintings were selected by the Cantini Museum for French exhibitions in Kobe, Japan, and Haifa, Israel.
His encounter with Ambrogiani would prove decisive for his painting style, characterized by thick impasto, vivid colors, and boldly applied layers of paint.
Ambrogiani introduced Pourteyron to Jean GIONO, who became his friend and asked him to illustrate his notebooks.
Giono remarked, “Pourteyron draws with color; it is from the interplay of colors that forms emerge.”
Michel Pourteyron would win the Grand Prix de Cassis in 1964
The coveted Grand Prix de l’Oursin in Carry-le-Rouet
Somewhat intoxicated by his success, he would settle right in the heart of Marseille, near the port, on the Cours d’Estienne d’Orves, which would become a hub for artists, journalists, and art critics
In an Expressionist style characterized by arrangements of graphic elements designed to create a striking visual impact, fiery bursts of paint, and rough impasto intended to banish any sense of prettiness from the painting. Pourteyron throws things in the viewer’s face. After seeing the works of Appel, Corneille, and Jorn in the early 1970s, he absorbed the Cobra movement… and turned toward abstraction.
He returned to Gironde, where he passed away in 2011
The Galerie Guardia in Le Castellet pays him ongoing tribute through exhibitions...
