Heavy necklace featuring 31 spherical beads and a large, oval-shaped center bead surrounded by small beads
all made of brass with an antique finish
total length 44 cm

The entire piece is strung on a wire. Each element features a superb patina and remarkable wear, attesting to the age of this piece.
Presumed date: late 19th to early 20th century
This is a creation of the little-known “Vere” people. This group inhabited northeastern Nigeria, bordering Cameroon
and is todaynearly extinct
Their artistic production was limited to basketry and rare brass objects such as this necklace
A similar necklace is housed at the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal, the Netherlands, and is illustrated in Grootaers and Eisenburger (2002, p. 357)
