Ink Drawing On Paper—dutch Horseman. Japan, 19th Century Edo, Meiji Period
An ink drawing on paper of great finesse, on the reverse of which calligraphic inscriptions can be seen. The work depicts a horseman in period costume riding a spotted, rearing horse. Depictions of European merchants, Jesuits, and diplomats on horseback began to appear with the arrival of this international community confined to Deshima, a former artificial island located in Nagasaki Bay. Japanese artists depicted them with curiosity and a sense of the exotic, capturing their clothing, hats, and horses harnessed in the Western style. Perfectly framed with a beveled mat and a stained oak frame. Dimensions: 26 x 18 cm. With frame: 41 x 39 cm
