Jean Micas - Town Hall Of The Free Commune
Artist: Jean Micas (1906-1952)
Painting, oil on canvas, depicting “The Town Hall of the Free Commune” on Sunday, May 15, 1949—11 Rue du Chanez in Paris 75016.
This scene depicts a gathering or a municipal/community council meeting in front of a sign bearing the inscription “Mairie de la Commune Libre.”
The “free communes” were folkloric or carnival-like republics created in various French neighborhoods (such as Montmartre and elsewhere) featuring mock mayors, costumes, and satirical marching bands.
We can make out several costumed figures, tricolor sashes, and a child—here portrayed by actor Patrick PRÉJEAN—accompanied by his parents, Albert PRÉJEAN and Lysiane REY, who are also both actors.
On the right, we see a figure dressed in a uniform with a bicorne hat or a helmet with a plume, reminiscent of local folklore.
This painting is in good condition. Signed, countersigned, dated, and titled.
Dimensions
With frame - H 1m05 x W 86cm
