BIOGRAPHY:
Jules Salles is a French painter born in Nîmes on June 14, 1814 and died in the same city on December 30, 1900. Renowned first for his portraits, then for his genre scenes, he is also famous in Nîmes as a donor to the Jules Salles Gallery.
After beginning his training at the drawing school in his hometown where he won a painting prize in 1839, he perfected his skills for three months at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes with the Nîmes painter Numa Boucoiran, then moved to Paris to attend, thanks to Charles Jalabert and also for three months, the studio of Paul Delaroche.
From then on, he traveled to Italy and visited the museums of Rome, Naples and Venice, cities to which he would return frequently throughout his life.
In 1841, he began exhibiting in Nimes at the Maison Carrée.
He married Mélina Boissier, daughter of a pastor who had become a prefectural councilor. Unable to have children, the couple adopted Marie-Hélène Daumas, eleventh daughter of Pastor François Daumas, in 1857. He was elected a member of the Académie de Nîmes on ; he would be its president for the year 1861. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1859, the year in which his wife died. He remarried in 1865 with Adélaïde Wagner, also a painter known as Adélaïde Salles-Wagner.
Both exhibited successfully in Amiens, Nîmes, Montpellier, Clermont-Ferrand, Caen and Paris.
In 1900, Jules Salles offered his last paintings to the city.
He was buried in the Protestant cemetery of Nîmes.
Listed in the Bénézit and the little masters of painting by Schurr.
Condition: Good condition, some fine stabilized cracks, small surface restorations, wear and tear on the Marie-Louise.
