Jerusalem Delivered -1803- 2 Volumes

Jerusalem Delivered*, a poem translated from the Italian, published by Bossange, Masson, and Besson in 2 volumes.
Jerusalem Delivered* (*La Gerusalemme liberata*), the celebrated epic masterpiece by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso, saw several prestigious editions in France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries—most notably those published by the bookseller-publisher partnership of Bossange, Masson, and Besson.
These two volumes belong to the most iconic edition, released in 1803 (Year XI of the French Revolutionary Calendar).
Features of the 1803 (Year XI) edition by Bossange, Masson, and Besson:
Highly sought after by bibliophiles, this version is characterized by the following:

It is a two-volume octavo (in-8) edition.
The French text features the renowned prose translation by Charles-François Le Brun (who would later become Archchancellor of the Empire), prized for its fidelity and elegance.
The work includes a biographical account of Tasso, written by the academician Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Suard.
It is a remarkably illustrated edition, containing a frontispiece portrait of Tasso (drawn by Chasselat and engraved by Delvaux), as well as 20 exquisite full-page engravings—one at the beginning of each canto—based on drawings by Le Barbier the Elder and executed by prominent artists of the era (such as Bovinet, Dambrun, Delignon, Langlois, and Trière).

Today, these antiquarian volumes are highly prized in the rare book market and among bibliophiles for the refinement of their period calfskin bindings—featuring gilt edges—and for the high quality of their etched engravings. In good condition for its age; the paper may show slight, scattered foxing, which does not interfere with reading or detract from the beauty of the engravings.

This copy bears the ex-libris stamp of the Marquis A.T. du Prat (Antoine-Théodore du Prat, 1775–1855), a renowned bibliophile and descendant of the Chancellor to Francis I.

An exceptional pedigree that attests to the quality and state of preservation of this collection. This stamp—known as a mark of provenance or an impressed/inked ex-libris—serves as historical evidence.
It indicates that these books belonged to the private library of the Marquis Antoine-Théodore du Prat.
The Marquis Antoine-Théodore du Prat (1775–1855) was a French aristocrat and a direct descendant of the famous Chancellor Antoine Duprat (the all-powerful minister to Francis I).
The Marquis was a scholar and a passionate collector. He spent much of his life reconstructing his family’s library and amassing a collection of significant religious, historical, and literary works. His signature practice was to mark his ownership by having his personal stamp or coat of arms applied to the title pages or endpapers of his books.
