Late 19th Century Pair Of Biscuit Porcelain Busts
Elegant pair of finely crafted biscuit porcelain
busts, depicting two of Queen Victoria’s children: the future King Edward VII
and Princess Alice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Both busts feature inscriptions
identifying the subjects. The future King is shown in regal attire with a
hairstyle characteristic of the period, while the Princess is depicted with a
glimpse of her dress and a delicate garland of flowers adorning her head. These
pieces are inspired by two renowned works from the second half of the 19th century,
as noted by the inscriptions on the reverse: the bust of Princess Alice was
created by the English sculptor Mary Thornycroft, while the bust of King Edward
VII is the work of sculptor Morton Edwards. This pair of sculptures is marked
by great taste and refinement, capable of adding a touch of history and
antiquity to any setting. English manufacture, late 19th century.
