Laurent Détouche is perhaps best known for his *Martyrdom of Joan of Arc*—a painting measuring 2.70 meters in width—which served as his debut entry at the 1841 Salon (now held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Orléans). He continued to exhibit historical scenes at the Paris Salon until 1880, frequently drawing his subjects from French history (notable examples include *Cardinal de Richelieu’s Study*, *The Remorse of Charles IX*, *The Young Sully Escaping the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre*, *Rembrandt Painting His Famous ‘Anatomy Lesson’*, and *The Early Days of Lesueur*).
The painting presented here is a fine example of this historical genre. The scene takes place in the home of the mayor of Strasbourg, where he and his grandson listen as Rouget de Lisle—accompanied by a partisan soldier and his wife at the piano—sings *La Marseillaise* for the very first time. The work reflects the grandiloquent style of Détouche, a student of the academic painter Paul Delaroche who was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1838. It also reveals the artist’s keen eye for anecdote—a trait consistent with his work in the genre of picturesque, narrative-driven scenes.
The painting is dated 1878 and was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1879—the very year that *La Marseillaise* was officially adopted as the national anthem of France!
