Large Imari Porcelain Dish From Japan 47 Cm– Meiji Period (19th Century)
This platter is distinguished by its particularly dynamic and fluid asymmetrical pictorial composition, typical of Japanese aesthetics. The decoration, entirely hand-painted, unfolds broad, sinuous waves in underglaze cobalt blue, enhanced by rich work in saffron iron red and sea green enamels, and delicate touches of gold.
This motif of large, two-tone spiral waves, combined with clean lines (the stylized crane drawn with a single red line), demonstrates a bolder and more modernized graphic style, characteristic of the artistic renewal of the Meiji era, intended for the great Western world's fairs.
The central scene highlights a poetic aquatic landscape where bouquets of blooming irises rise. At the heart of this lush landscape, two stylized Japanese cranes (symbols of longevity and fidelity) are depicted: one is painted in iron red in full flight, while the second appears in white filigree, delicately outlined in the background. The rim of the dish is adorned with a refined frieze alternating exotic seashells, marine scrolls, and vibrant sun motifs.
On the central white background, at least three or four small, raised, irregular dots are visible (under the metal attachment and on the inner rim). These are perfect traces of spur marks. These small clay prongs were used to elevate the dish in the kiln to prevent it from collapsing under its own weight during firing.
This is the unmistakable technical signature of a Japanese Arita piece.
